My Full-Mouth Reconstruction is Falling Apart

Posted by AllSmiles

In 2022, I got a full mouth reconstruction with crowns, veneers, and dental implants. Within two years, the two veneers and three crowns loosened, including a crown on an implant tooth. It hurts to chew food, and my mouth is sore. I’ve been experiencing some bleeding from my gums. The dentist who did the work left the US.  My attempts to get dental records failed because the practice closed. So, a refund is not an option. Do I have any recourse other than finding a new dentist? – Thanks. Lincoln from GA

Lincoln,

It appears your previous dentist may have left the country to avoid legal trouble. Unfortunately, this means your options for legal action are limited. Your best course of action is to find a new dentist to correct your full-mouth reconstruction. If you can find a Google Business page for the dentist, consider leaving online reviews to inform other prospective patients about your experience.

A quality dental implant lasts for decades without implant fixtures or the crown loosening.

When seeking a new dentist, especially for full-mouth reconstruction, which includes implants and cosmetic work, keep these points in mind:

  • Treatment Costs: Be cautious of unusually low prices for dental implants. Such offers can sometimes indicate shortcuts in the procedure. While high cost doesn’t guarantee quality, extremely low prices should raise a red flag.
  • Professional Credentials: Look for dentists with recognized credentials in implantology. Dentists holding fellowship or diplomate status in implant dentistry. Look for training from organizations like the International Congress of Oral Implantologists or the American Board of Oral Implantology (a part of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry) that have met strict training requirements. Other strong indicators include membership in these organizations, or training from a U.S. university implant program or the Misch Implant Institute.
  • Diagnostic Precision: A thorough diagnosis is essential. For multi-implant procedures, ensure your dentist utilizes a 3D X-ray, such as a CT scan, for accurate planning.
  • Review Online Feedback: Always review online feedback, particularly on platforms such as Google and Yelp. While not every review is perfectly objective, they can provide valuable insights into a dentist’s clinical performance, particularly with full-mouth reconstruction.

Given your history with dislodged dental crowns and veneers, you’ll need a dentist who also possesses strong skills in cosmetic dentistry.
