Is It Safe to Let a Dentist Do My Implant Surgery?
Posted by AllSmiles
I would like to make getting a dental implant as stressful as possible. Two of the three dentists with whom I consulted would refer me to a periodontist for implant placement. The third dentist does everything in her office. Is it safe to allow a dentist to place the implants? Will I have a better outcome by seeing a specialist? Thanks. Randall from Austin, TX

Some general dentists perform a significant amount of oral surgery and achieve excellent outcomes. A dentist who has performed bone grafting for several years typically develops strong surgical judgment and technique. Many general practitioners also complete advanced procedures such as sinus lifts and impacted extractions as part of their regular practice.
How to Evaluate a Dentist’s Implant Training

Rather than focusing solely on whether a dentist is an oral surgeon, I would focus on implant-specific credentials. High-quality continuing education programs provide extensive surgical training for implant dentistry and help dentists manage increasingly complex cases.
A strong implant provider usually holds advanced training from one or more recognized institutions.
- International Congress of Oral Implantologists
- Misch Implant Institute
- American Academy of Implant Dentistry
- Engel Institute
Dentists with this background often deliver excellent implant care without holding a surgical specialty license. Advanced credentials become especially important when implant cases involve bone grafting or anatomical challenges.
