Do I Need My Wisdom Tooth Removed If It Rotted?

Posted by AllSmiles

Young man thinking with his hand on his chinMy wisdom tooth rotted below the gumline. I can’t see that there is anything left, even if I examine it with a flashlight. I can see inside what the tooth was. Nothing is there. Should I be worried? – Thanks. Tyler from FL

Tyler,

Many dentists would suggest having a broken tooth evaluated. Being candid, you are likely fine right now, so it’s not an emergency. If the tooth does cause trouble, it will probably continue to break down quickly. Once the crown is gone, the remaining tooth structure decays fast because enamel no longer protects it.

Because the tooth is completely open, there is minimal risk of infection spreading into the surrounding bone. The decay tends to move quickly rather than quietly smoldering under the surface.

Why a Dental Visit Still Makes Sense

Allowing a tooth to reach this stage is risky. You were fortunate to avoid a serious infection earlier, especially if dental care has been postponed for some time.

Catching problems early makes treatment easier and far less stressful.

  • Early cavities are easier to treat than advanced decay
  • Other teeth may already show early signs of infection
  • A simple exam can prevent more serious issues
