My wisdom tooth rotted below the gumline. I can’t see that there is anything left, even if I examine it with a flashlight. I can see inside what the tooth was. Nothing is there. Should I be worried? – Thanks. Tyler from FL

Many dentists would suggest having a broken tooth evaluated. Being candid, you are likely fine right now, so it’s not an emergency. If the tooth does cause trouble, it will probably continue to break down quickly. Once the crown is gone, the remaining tooth structure decays fast because enamel no longer protects it.

Because the tooth is completely open, there is minimal risk of infection spreading into the surrounding bone. The decay tends to move quickly rather than quietly smoldering under the surface.
